Growths on the eyelid may not always irritate your eye, but they can be bothersome cosmetically or may indicate more serious health problems. ![]() Most melanosis lesions are visible on the white part of the eye, although they can be located underneath the eyelid or inside the inner eyelid itself. Primary acquired melanosis is more common in fair-skinned individuals and carries a higher risk for melanoma, particularly if it appears in middle age or later. Racial melanosis, common in people with darker complexions, is typically benign and presents earlier on in life. Melanosis looks like a flat spot on the conjunctiva, ranging from tan to dark brown to blue-gray. Approximately 1% of nevi transform into melanomas. However, if you notice a change in size, elevation, shape, or color, your eye doctor may suspect a malignant (cancerous) lesion called melanoma. These spots are benign and typically appear before adulthood.
